What happened to the subreddit?

Theres massive protests because reddit is banning third party frontends or something. Its been very common for social media sites to do recently so they can make sure they're farming everyone's data.

Some of the strongest argument are that Reddit's official stuff is awful for visually impaired users, and it doesn't support the tools that are needed to make moderation manageable.

Some subreddits went for a temporary blackout, but SS14 said fuck it. There's a Lemmy now:

It seems nice.

Yes, the subreddit is going to be on indefinite lock down to protest reddit's recent API changed and management decisions. I won't be using Reddit anymore due to RIF shutting down, so I have little interest in maintaining it. God also knows how long until they shut down old reddit too.

I still need to remove it from the website and such. I'll get around to it some time.

In a way it's fortunate that this subreddit was not high-profile enough, because reportedly Reddit has been forcing subreddits to end their blackout or have their entire Moderator team replaced by Reddit. Which is another reason to move off of Reddit

Hm, what are you trying to say f0x?

Like, I don't understand what are the benefits of federation for forum and forum-like things. But it's not like forums and federation are in opposition, I think. Do you not like the Reddit style format? Is it something else?

Corporations have a drive to increase profits, often to a suicidal level, so no matter what I expect reddit and discord to not be around forever and even when they aren't killing themselves I expect them to abuse my rights and privacy at every opportunity.

Federated technology seems cool but ultimately no one uses it and even when people use it the inherent interconnected nature of it turns it into twitter but even fucking worse. Bots, scammers, probably state backed propagandists, etc, all roam almost unchecked and sometimes even flood the fediverse with spam. Creating communities and cultures is almost totally impossible as everyone gets a little bit of everything all of the time.

Forums like this one ran by individuals and small groups have been around for decades covering countless topics and given how shit the internet is becoming I expect them to remain important for the foreseeable future.

Hey, sorry for taking too long to respond.

"Federated technology seems cool but ultimately no one uses it"

Are you saying you don't use e-mail?

Hmm, I don't know. What you're describing here sounds a lot like Twitter, so it's not that much of a surprise that something that tries to emulate Twitter would have similar issues. Most people I see joining Mastodon seem to like it a lot, but those are people that enjoy Twitter, and it's easy to imagine Mastodon/Fediverse, with its problems, still being better than present day Twitter. I have no personal experience with that, as I got tired of Twitter way back when it was still cool. I have considered joining Mastodon, as it'd be something that maybe just maybe my friends would consider instead of Twitter and/or Instagram, but, ultimately, I didn't bother. Personally, I'm more of a good ole blog kind of person.

But what I want to say is that I don't understand how Lemmy interacts with the fediverse, and it's entirely possible that small niche communities can remain unaffected by the wider fediverse. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

(as a side note, do you know the Gemini protocol? I think you might enjoy the geminisphere)

Sorry for the long reply too.

If you want to use the term "federated technology" outside of the fediverse stuff then you could argue the entire internet is "federated" between the major ISP oligopolies.
